The story of the Mid Autumn Festival, or Tết Trung Thu, is slightly different to the Chinese version. The Vietnamese version is a classic as a bloke gets sent to the moon because his wife pissed on a tree. Children use lanterns to light a path for the bloke to get back to earth. While the myth of this story is not lost on the children, you still see a lot of people publicly urinating around the city.
Very nice dragon !
ReplyDeleteIf my memory serves me right, I don't recall any dragon dance during Tet Trung Thu when I was growing up. I guess I had a deprived childhood!
ReplyDeleteI was 13 when I left vn. There was always dragan dance during Tet TT.
ReplyDeleteactually, I did not leave vn until 1978. 75-78 are the worst years of my life. beautran, you maybe right, if you were growing up during those years, there were no dragon dance or festival.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, I left in 1983, there were kids running around with lanterns but no dragon dance, at least not in the part of town that I was growing up ( Tran Quang Khai St)
