Wild storms yesterday

Strange scenes for March - a very wet and windy day yesterday. This photo was taken downtown at the bottom of Hai Bà Trưng st. As you can see the wind has blown a tree across the street and damaged a Mercedes station wagon in the process, plus there was localised flooding throughout the city. Chances are the car is not covered by insurance. Photo courtesy of Riina

Surely the power lines would have been brought down as well? The line are usually all through the trees over there

Hard to tell if any lines actually came down. The Merc copped a fair bit of damage. I would like to see how the engine looks under the hood. Great that Riina was on the spot

Great shot. That guy definitely will not have insurance for that! I bet if you had of stayed around you would seen motorbikes just going underneath the fallen tree rather than take a detour around the block. Strange weather for the dry season?

just passed by the scene again and spotted another stump further down the street, so this was not the only tree coming down on Hai Ba Trung yesterday. luckily I passed without being hit ;-) and indeed, we just went over the sidewalk to bypass the tree.

I know they have been doing footpath renovations down there. Do you think they could have weakened the trees strength during that process. Especially if 2 fell over in winds that were similar to what those trees have faced over the last 20 years?

Could it be that the tree's roots have rotted from prolonged flooding? The tree was protected from wind because it's next to the building and may not have been toppled by wind. With all the wet weather and these power cables... I wonder if there is great danger of electrocution and fire?

a very wet and interesting capture. it is sad when such large trees go down during a storm.
