We have the washout from a tropical storm over us at the moment, bringing drizzle for the past 48 hours, which is a strange sight in the dry season

More flooding

This flooding is tidal and is not related to the devastating aftermath of typhoon Ketsana. Even though we are 1000 kilometers away, we usually get some wash out from the annual central coast typhoons. Strangely this has not really happened this year

High tide in District 2

Not far from where I live, the high tide of the Saigon river comes up through the storm water drains and spills out across the lower lying streets. Newcomers always think that the flooding is associated with heavy rains in the wet season, but this area floods naturally during the higher tides of each month. I have no idea how the residents can stand it

The wet season is upon us

Have been meaning to get a photo of the beginning of wet season for some time. It seemed to have started about 6 weeks back. This is a shot (with the wiper blades on high) driving down Diên Biên Phu st in Bình Thạnh district. It was your classical tropical storm around 4 pm

Rainbow

The sky here is usually very polluted, and this picture is no exception. Hazy, almost grainy, with limited differentiation between the colours is standard for our rainbows. It also means the wet season is among us.

Rain and gloom outside city hall

What is basically the Saigon town hall, the HCMC People's Committee Building is a spectacular example of French colonial architecture and was originally built as a hotel in the early 1900's.

The wash out from a tropical storm has been hanging over Saigon since last Friday bringing continual dark clouds and rain. This picture was taken around 11:30 am

Still raining

A common sight on motorbikes during the wet season is the second passenger not having a rain coat. To get around this problem the second passenger can hide themselves under the back flap of the drivers rain coat. While this may stop you from getting drenched, you cannot see anything and for me personally, this would be an extremely uncomfortable feeling. If you cannot follow the flow of the traffic with your eyes you are at the complete mercy of the driver, who you hope knows what they are doing.

Dark and stormy

The wet season is still among us. Tropical Storm Mekkhala swept through central Vietnam on Wednesday and even in the south of Vietnam we are still feeling the wash out effects from it. This photo was taken at 3 pm and you can see it was very dark. The north of Vietnam is watching a new storm called Higos developing in the China Sea. Predictions are it will turn towards the island of Hainan and wash out over southern China.
