The Hanoi gloom

I sometimes get obsessed by the crappiness of the weather in Hanoi. It can be so depressing. This photo is taken from the bridge over the Red River, about 11 am, is in colour, and has not been enhanced or played around with. Classic Hanoi miserableness

Storm approaching on Nguyễn Văn Linh Blvd

Nguyễn Văn Linh boulevard is one of the widest roads in Saigon, running from District 7 down to the start of the Mekong highway southwest of the city. Seldom is it packed with traffic, although this may change once the infrastructure is in place to hook up the north and south highways, creating a HCMC bypass.

Rainbow

The sky here is usually very polluted, and this picture is no exception. Hazy, almost grainy, with limited differentiation between the colours is standard for our rainbows. It also means the wet season is among us.

Wild storms yesterday

Strange scenes for March - a very wet and windy day yesterday. This photo was taken downtown at the bottom of Hai Bà Trưng st. As you can see the wind has blown a tree across the street and damaged a Mercedes station wagon in the process, plus there was localised flooding throughout the city. Chances are the car is not covered by insurance. Photo courtesy of Riina

Blue Sky Blue this morning

A very blue sky this morning. The logical theory behind why the sky is blue can be found here, but this does not explain why it was so blue in the morning. At both sunrise and sunset the sky should have more reds and oranges. Any theories?

Avoiding the rain

I see this security guard most days sitting under the large umbrella. Usually it is to avoid the harsh sun, today it was kept low to avoid the showers

Purple haze

Not the song by Jimmy Hendrix, not a large run of high quality LSD produced in 1966 by Owsley Stanley, not a 2004 album by a rapper Cam'ron, not the street name of an alleged high-potency strain of Cannabis, not an American beer and not a professional wrestler from the New Zealand promotion Kiwi Pro Wrestling, but the strange colour of last nights sky. To learn more about why the sky is purple, check out this explanation, but if you are looking for the other Purple Hazes, you can start by looking here
