Tropical flowers

I am not sure what type of plant this is, probably something from the Apocynaceae family as it has similar flowers to that of oleander and frangipani. We have a few of them in our yard and they are quite striking

It's Adenium obesum and we call it Adenium or Desert-rose. They have some spectacular in your area.

I just found a picture of my Adenium. I posted it in my blog on June 9, 2007.

Not quite right TOG.
Its called the akermanium and it comes from the footscray wetlands area. Very striking flower yet can have a short lifespan. Usually wilts by september.

Anonymous can say what he wants, but akermanium isn't even a word.

Here is some material about your plant. 'It is an evergreen succulent shrub in tropical climates and semi-deciduous to deciduous in colder climates, is also dependent on the particular species. Growing to 1-3 m in height, with pachycaul stems and a stout, swollen basal caudex. The leaves are spirally arranged, clustered toward the tips of the shoots, simple entire, leathery in texture, 5-15 cm long and 1-8 cm broad. The flowers are tubular, 2-5 cm long, with the outer portion 4-6 cm diameter with five petals, resembling those of other related genera such as Plumeria and Nerium. The flowers tend to red and pink, often with a whitish blush outward of the throat.

Thanks for filling me in TOG.

Anon, history shows that Akermanium blooms until the last Saturday in September, year in, year out

I don't think you really want to argue with Tog. He knows plants! He is also right to say that the word Akermanium does not exist in any English books. The photo you blog is definitely that of an Adenium Obesum (just Google "desert rose" and you'll find plenty of photos just like yours.

The akermanium does exist.
It last bloomed in September 1954..
