1892 map of Saigon

On the opposite wall to yesterdays post is a map of Saigon in 1892, which highlights the two current day districts 1 (original Saigon - at middle right, next to the river) and 5 (originally called Cholon and home to many Chinese - at bottom left). If this map were updated to present day it would be completely covered by roads and show roughly a quarter of HCMC's size.

You can see the old train line that used to run from Ham Nghi st down to Cholon, through rice paddies back then no doubt!

Interesting to see what is still around from 1892 - the current independence palace, the large public park behind it, the zoological gardens, Saigon University, the current Marie Curie institute, the hospital on Ly Tu Trung. I love the fact that Phu Nhuan on this map is like a little hamlet and is now probably close to the geographical center of the city. Also the canals have been filled in, diverted or controlled in some other way. Very cool

Maps, and comparing them through time, are always so fascinating. Patterns are revealed that we would not understand otherwise.
